Lompoc Valley Riders is one of the oldest formally organized riding clubs in
Santa Barbara County. Through the '40s and '50s, some local ranchers and others
interested in roping loosely organized "Lompoc Valley Riding and Roping Club."
They had events (roping) on the old rodeo ground off of 7th Street (now
Crestview Terrace). There was also a sanctioned 4th of July rodeo they hosted.
They eventually built an arena on the "J.M." pastures off Highway 1 - and then
soon disbanded. Elly Robb recalls, "Though it was named 'Riding and Roping
Club,' I don't ever recall even one organized ride- just roping."
Finally in 1965, a group formally organized "Lompoc Valley Riding Club, Inc",
to promote horsemanship, horse shows, gymkhanas, and trail riding. The club has
been continuously active ever since. There were many years during which the club
hosted six very successful horse shows and six gymkhanas, in addition to trail
rides. In 1972, the club held the first Competitive Trail Ride. The year 2003
was the 32nd annual CTR. As interests and participation changed, so did LVR.
Horse shows and gymkhanas were gradually phased out and LVR focused more on
trail rides and campouts. In 1989, LVR hosted the first Poker Ride which was a
big hit and continues to be.
LVR has evolved through many transitions and is still evolving and going
strong!
